Volos in Greece - a portrait of the beginner-friendly sailing area!

When we think of Greece, small fishing villages, cosy tavernas and quiet bays immediately spring to mind. Although it is one of the most popular sailing areas in the Mediterranean, there are always quiet places to swim or anchor along the coast and between the numerous small islands. Today we would like to introduce you to the sailing area of Volos in the Northern Sporades.  It is ideal for beginners and suitable for a relaxed family holiday.

Overview of the volos sailing area

Volos is located between Athens and Thessaloniki and is an excellent starting point for sailing trips to the northern Sporades Islands. These are known for their unspoilt nature and particularly beautiful beaches.

The islands of Skopelos, Skiathos and Alonissos are popular destinations that can be easily reached from Volos. There you will find charming fishing villages, ancient monasteries and fine sandy beaches next to steep cliffs. There is an abundance of anchorages and crystal clear waters, making them perfect destinations for sailors.

Short overview

- How to get there: There are direct flights from Germany to Volos Nea Anchialos

- Climate: Mediterranean | Temperatures between 24 and 30 degrees

- Winds: Meltemi

- Sea: Aegean Sea, or Pagasitic Gulf

- Sailing season: May to October

The sailing area around Volos is particularly suitable for beginners and families. The sea is often calm here and the Meltemi is usually weaker. The sheltered location of the Pagasitic Gulf ensures consistent and predictable weather conditions, ideal for those with less experience on the water. These conditions are also ideal for children, as the risk of seasickness is minimised. Safety on board also plays a role, of course.

Sights and activities in Volos

In addition to sailing, there are many sights and activities to discover in and around Volos. In the town itself, charming tavernas and cafés along the harbour promenade invite you to linger.

Historical sites, such as the Archaeological Museum of Volos, offer insights into the rich history of the region. Another special highlight is Mount Pelion, which is ideal for hiking and exploring.

The lush vegetation and breathtaking views make the mountain an ideal excursion destination for the whole family.

Trikeri Island

The small island is located around 15 nautical miles from Volos. As the island is really small, there is hardly any infrastructure - so you can only explore the island on foot, for example. However, given its size, it only takes about an hour to walk from one side to the other through the lush island vegetation. There is also a monastery at the highest point of the island that is well worth a visit.

A dream trio: the islands of Skopelos, Skiathos and Alonissos

You may already know Skopelos and Skiathos as the location for the film "Mamma Mia" - so they have achieved a certain level of fame that attracts many visitors to the islands in summer. There is even an open-air cinema on Skiathos that plays the film several times a week.

Skiathos is also home to real dream beaches and water sports activities such as banana boating. The shallow waters make the island ideal for families. Koukounaries beach is particularly recommended.

In the island's capital, you can explore Bourtzi Castle and the old town castle. Special tip: Take a day trip to Evangelistrias Monastery and Kounistra Monastery, where there is a small monastery shop selling olive oil, honey and other small souvenirs.

Time to discover Skopelos!

From Skiathos, you can sail about 15 nautical miles to the harbour of Chora. In the capital of Skopelos, you can stroll through the small alleyways and discover shops and bars. Live music is played in some restaurants - you should definitely make a reservation here. Further away from the capital, it is less turbulent and smaller villages and sandy beaches with clear water invite you to linger.

You can either hire a car locally or take the local bus.
